From Attila's example it's clear that the cross chisel and the cross-cut chisel are quite different shapes and meant for quite different purposes.

Having done some carving myself I'd be inclined to think that the best set of tools to recommend a student would be a chisel to clear large unwanted surfaces (a messy job) and flat or other shaped chisels for more controlled shaping and finishing.
