German term

Visierstrich

German to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation Compass
Visierdraht: Draht/senkrechter Strich, mit der ein Ziel angepeilt werden kann

What would the term for this be in English?

Discussion

Kcda Oct 25, 2007:
Bow and arrow is being used in this sport? If so I believe it could be the line (strich) in the aiming area on which the arrow must rest accurately to achieve a good aim(anpeilung)? Which sports is it?

you can find the sight wire for example here: http://www.bossproshops.com/bullseye/sights.html and here for a compass: http://www99.epinions.com/content_168580386436
To find more examples just google "sight line" or "sight wire" in combination with compass, gun etc.

agree Kcda : I am very curious. What sports is it supposed to be? Could you please expand your explanation?/Ok.

Initially I found both terms used for compasses, but there a a lot of links to other applications, too. See the links I added.
agree Edward L. Crosby III : Could also be correct.

sighting line

If the device in question is a mirror compass. See http://gorp.away.com/gorp/publishers/menasha/how_navi.htm (English) and www.dpsgwegberg.de/truppstunde/kompass.php (German)

finishing line

As it is perpendicular to the course, it sounds like a finishing line or finishing tape.

Visierdraht senkrecht stellen. Bei einem Spiegelkompass den Spiegel auf etwa 45° klappen. Kimme hochklappen (entfällt bei einem Spiegelkompass). ...

agree Kcda : I suppose not the same meaning as in 'track and field' sports! Example: 100 meter run - starting line and finishing line. The variety of the subject field of this question confuses. :)
