German term

Bestandshaltung

I've tried to avoid maintenance because of the possible confusion with "Instandhaltung", but what other word is there for holding onto a developed property instead of selling it, renting it, etc.? These are just two instances; the word pops up about 4 or 5 times.

Discussion

James Phetterplace (asker) Sep 13, 2008:
Thank you Tom. I didn't preface the question with "dauerhafte", because the term Bestandhaltung appears multiple times, and only this once is it preceded by that word. The contexts show that it refers to the same thing, so I didn't feel the translation of Bestandhaltung would be essentially changed by the term dauerhafte in this text.
Ellen Kraus Sep 13, 2008:
because you didnt ask for it. you could integrate it by formulating: a permanent retention of the property ....
Adrian MM. (X) Sep 13, 2008:
Is there any reason you didn't prefix the question with dauerhafte?

Selected

Holding (or retaining) the property as an investment

Or you could use '...the property in the (investment) portfolio'.

In the IZ dictionary we translated 'Bestandsimmobilien' as 'portfolio properties' - we couldn't find a more exact term. The closest alternative, 'property holdings' is not quite equivalent.

Many thanks
neutral Adrian MM. (X) : dauerhafte? long-term holding as an investment is a tautology.//The problem lies with question, not with your answer. Prefixing with dauerhaft could conceivably change the answer.

Hmmm. There are also short- and medium-term investment strategies. But surely everything is relative...

German term (edited): Bestandhaltung

continued maintenance (or retention als Beibehaltung)

vielleicht trägt <continued > dazu bei, den Terminus nicht als Wartung zu interpretieren

German term (edited): Bestandhaltung

portfolio retention

could work here, e.g., "portfolio retention of developed properties"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Paul Kachur : not sure about "retention" part, but "portfolio" is what we seem to be after here

agree Adrian MM. (X) : incorporates well the idea of dauerhafte - which should have prefixed the question.
