Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
I know what it means (go to bat for), but can't think of an elegant rendering for a medical article.
Any ideas welcome!

to champion
probably comes the closest to the original. I absolutely HATE the term, because Germans often use it inappropriately, when it has nothing to do with warfare, etc. That's probably why you're hesitant to use the go to bat image, too.
Other possiblities (a little more context would be good) - they are supporting, they are pushing for, they uphold, etc., etc.

Aniello Scognamiglio (X)

Why?
don't you like your version "go to bat for"???
"Eine Lanze brechen..." is absolutely ok even in a medical context!

: If this is an analogy borrowed from cricket - and I'm pretty sure it is - then it runs the risk of not being understood in the USA and elsewhere.

I think "putting their weight behind" conveys the expertise rather neatly.
