Discussion

David Moore (X) Jun 13, 2007:
To me, it would only say it is complete in itself; not where it is located.
Sybille Brückner (asker) Jun 13, 2007:
But would "self-contained" mean, it stands separately? On some cranes it does, on others it is attached to the operator's cabin and accessible through a door from the cabin.
David Moore (X) Jun 13, 2007:
Hello Sybille: I don't see any reason not to use "self-contained".
Sybille Brückner (asker) Jun 13, 2007:
@ David: Thanks for trying to explain. The Portalriegel is called "gantry girder". I know what it is, even have seen it (working for a long time already with texts of crane construction. Purpose: Operating instruction of the crane.
Self-contained came to my mind for "abgeschlossen", can one say so?

The Portalriegel, as far as I can find out, seems to refer to a bar across an opening (a "gantry bar"?), which blocks access to a room which actually has no door as such but just a doorway.

Here it appears to be saying that the barred-off room is regarded as an enclosed electrical equipment room (etc.), for the purposes of the document you are translating - safety regulations, perhaps?

Seeing the added context, I would suggest using "cabinet" instead of "room".
Peer comment(s):

agree Ebru Kopf : That is it! "Switchgear" sounds nicer, shorter, you really can find on a plate.
