German term

Wegmengenmessung

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
...appears in the operating manual for a production line that manufactures a specific component for an exhaust turbocharger.

Context:
Durch eine Wegmengenmessung (1) werden beide Dichtungen im Deckel abgefragt.

(at this point in the process, the lid is about to be installed on the body of the component)

This is definitely something to do with sensor measurement but I have no idea what this term is describing. Can anybody help?

Discussion

Kenneth Beattie (asker) Jan 16, 2006:
Thank you both for your feedback I included this in a list of questions to the client as there are also 0 hits in Google so more explanation will be necessary.
Harry Borsje Jan 16, 2006:
Wegmenge > Wegstrecke (distance)?
Kenneth Beattie (asker) Jan 16, 2006:
no, unfortunately there is no further information given and this is the only time it appears in the text...
Daniel Bird Jan 16, 2006:
Any idea what sort of instrument is used for the measurement?

linear or path sensors

the German term designates the abstract act; in English you'd often have to resort to something more concrete; this is general enough; these jobbies are used on manufacturing lines/machinery a lot

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to you both for your answers. In the end I went for the "linear sensor" as this also implies some kind of displacement and is obviously used in a similar context. Thanks also (Daniel)for your explanation which was a help. I asked the customer but unfortunately didn't receive an explanation... "

displacement measurement

e.g. if the seal is in place AND the lid moves by x mm when bolted down then the seal must be good.
Admittedly a guess.
Good candidate for a question to the client I think
