French term

Magnum Sérigraphié

French to English Marketing Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
Magnum charme
Magnum Sérigraphié
This appears in a list of wines for sale from this cave. I was thinking of leaving the first as magnum "charme", but the second doesn't work as well... I presume it means it has a nice decorative label?? It's cheaper than the "magnum charme".

Discussion

Mariana Moreira Nov 5, 2004:
Sometimes, and regarding wines, Magnum refers to a bottle bigger than the usual winebottles. I've worked for 5 years in a wine company and that's what magnum was. I hope this helps you

silkscreen printed magnum

A magnum is a double-sized bottle (often, of champagne), containing 1½ litres; don't translate

Sérigraphié simply means that the bottle is silk-screen printed (or as your other answerer suggested, 'silkscreened' for short) instead of having a paper label stuck on (or could be 'as well as'!)

This was done a lot, for example, with bottles of champagne to celebrate the millennium, where they had bubbles or 2000 etc. printed all over them. Sometimes the same effect is achieved by using an all-over shrunk-on plastic sleeve; I imagine this might be cheaper, but I really don't know...

Thanks for your amended comment, Richard! Yes, I agree, I think we\'re both \'hyphen-addicts\', and I think it would work better here WITH hyphen --- though as Julie so rightly says, maybe simply \'silkscreened\' would be neatest of all --- it\'s probably irrelevant to the buyer of the wine, they will either understand or not the meaning of the term, whichever way it is put.

silkscreened

This isn´t really intended for grading. I just wanted to let you know that "sérigraphié" just means "silkscreened" in English. I doubt that really helps but just in case! :)
