French term

étude trajectoire

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
This is the heading of a pharmaceutical study:
Etude Trajectoire
Comparaison de l'efficacité d'un traitement hypolipémiant habituel et de Drug X 10 mg par jour chez des patients ayant une dyslipidémie de type IIa.
Cahier des charges de l'analyse statistique
It then goes on with:
Rappel de l'etude
Objectifs
Objectif principal
Objectifs secondaires
Plan global de l'étude
Methodologie stastique
Definition des populations étudiées
Critères de l'évaluation
Etc.

I'm not sure what they mean by "étude trajectoire", it seems like it's a normal clinical study protocol to me. If I type in "étude trajectoire" into Google, for example, I get results such as "étude de la trajectoire de...", but no hits that are similar to this.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Discussion

Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. May 7, 2011:
Title of article: Illness Trajectories: an Important Concept in the Management of Kidney Failure".
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. May 7, 2011:
Hi Laura: trajectory is a very common word (it is technical and specific) used in describing a type of study of illnesses. You can read about this here:

Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. May 7, 2011:
Hi Laura In the other document context, you may keep it as it is "trajectoire", as it is used as a name, but not in places where it is used as a descriptive of the type of studies being conducted.
Laura Miller (asker) May 7, 2011:
I was wondering about another possibility: in another document I have for this project, it says "name: Trajectoire", is it possible that this is the name of the project, and should be left as is?
Laura Miller (asker) May 7, 2011:
They are studying the efficacy of the two different treatments after a 3-month period.
Noem_Sport May 6, 2011:
Im just guessing but it could be something like Longitudinal Study...does it say how long the study goes for?

longitudinal study

Of course it is a longitudinal study.

Trajectoire implies to me that the statuses of the sample populations are assessed at more than two points during the course of the study. The status could be such measures as cholesterol level, presence or absence of such end points as death, MI, stroke, etc.

The results are plotted with time as the x axis. If the two drugs are not equivalent, one expects a divergence of the points.

disease (hyperlipidemia) course studies

Just like "life course studies"....

It is not longitudinal studies. Longitudinal studies is more general. Here you are following the trajectory of something specific (disease development with time). Nor is it "time series studies".

Alternatively, you could generate a hybrid between Noem_Sport's suggestion above and mine >

longitudinal disease course studies, or longitudinal studies of disease course.

If Noem_Sport posts an answer, I will be very happy if she gets the points :)

Yes, Laura. They are not studying the disease, but how the disease condition evolves, (that's the trajectory) with time, between the two groups.

You are very welcome, Laura.
Note from asker:
They're not studying the disease per se, but the efficacy of the treatments, would that change things?
Thank you so much for your help as well. I went with Michael's answer because his explanation fit the description of what I was working on (there were assessments at different points during the course of the study, etc.), but I really appreciate your help.
