Patient has persistent ileus; naso-gastric tube to suction the stomach contents was insufficiently productive; diuresis resumed, but fluid retention persisted; so they attempted to make the fluid retention negative (reverse it) at a low flow rate in order to try isolated UF; and the threat of elevated serum potassium disappeared.

I don't think the two are contradictory... If something is above normal levels, it has to be negative for a bit in order to return to normal, no? Perhaps "reverse" is safer then? Diseases, disorders and infections can be reversed, high levels of AST and ALT can be reversed... I think it simply means they are made to return to normal.
