montée de la droite

French to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): writeaway, Julie Barber

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

the current rise of the right

or possibly if needed "rightwing."

Merci.
agree Tony M : (not 'rightwing', though — that's the adjective form)

Thanks. Ye, if one were to use rightwing one would have to reformulate the sentence - add "parties" or something.
agree Martin Cassell : "rise of the right" ("actuel(le)" belongs, strictly speaking, with "conjoncture"/"contexte", surely?). And as Tony says, not 'rightwing'.

Merci. I was using 'current" to translate both "conjoncture" and "actuelle"

emergence of the right

Thank you, Sebastien!
neutral Tony M : I'm not sure that emergence' is entirely apt here, since the Right has already been around for rather a long time. / Yes, but the 'feel' isn't right here. Your link only says that in fairly specific senses. the primary sense is 'to become visible'

what can I say, Tony, it also may mean growth: http://www.answers.com/emergence?gwp=11&ver=2.3.0.609&method...
neutral Martin Cassell : to most EN speakers, I feel, this would suggest that the Right is a new phenomenon
19 mins
OK, so Rise it is!
neutral writeaway : agree with Tony and Martin. This isn't the right translation in the context. Emergence of Radical Right Corporatism isn't the same thing and it's in an historical context.

neutral Carlos Soares da Silva : Agree with tony amrtin and writeaway

the ascent of the right

Hello,

montée = ascent

I hope this helps.
Example sentence:

The ascent of the liberal party has led to great unrest in the country.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Not sure about the 'feel' of this, Matt! Kind of makes it sound a glorious thing — which I suppose to some people it probably is...
16 mins
I've seen "ascent" used in very negative contexts before (the ascent of the communist power)
neutral B D Finch : The ascent of Everest doesn't mean the mountain is getting bigger. Why is the "ascent of the communist power" necessarily "very negative"? Tsar Nicholas and Batista (to name but two) were not exactly dedicated to human values.

Let's forget negatives and positives. The "ascent" can clealry mean the "rise".
