Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Feb 4, 2004:
Sara asks a very good question - and I'm sorry if my context was inadequate. This is a description of, if you like, skills training programmes to take place in African forestry countries. At the moment I have "[training in] workshop layout, wood trimming, joinery, plywood production, panelling, moulding, and glued laminate manufacture" (I've changed the order of terms slightly from the French.) Please feel free to suggest alternatives. As always, grateful for this dialogue.
Sara Freitas Feb 4, 2004:
Can you give us more context and how you are dealing with the rest of the list? Thanks!
Sara Freitas Feb 4, 2004:
Adam, how are you translating the rest of the list, i.e. lamelle-colle, meubles, lambris, moulures?
Non-ProZ.com Feb 4, 2004:
This is more a list of activities rather than a list of items, I think - so I think Jane is pretty close to the vrit in her thinking. I'm still mulling over the exact phrasing. But even at this point, all contributions much appreciated.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to Gilbert for initiating his suggestion, and for all the others who participated. I would like specially to thank Jan Lamb-Ruiz for her contribution (although I cannot award her points in this case because of the structure of this forum); her "woodworking" suggestion was spot-on. I would also suggest that "milling" is a process used with wood even though "usinage" is not used much outside metalwork. Again, thanks to all. I come away from these dialogues much refreshed."

How about just plain

WOODWORKING.....it means to take the wood and do things to it generically....that would work here, right?

as opposed to say carpentry....

After looking at a bunch of sites with the term in French, I think it would work...so then, you have joinery or joining and woodworking...

neutral Sara Freitas : milling is usually usinage and the context seems to be a list of products

I don't think so; it's a list of wood processing stages or phases; and I'm not sure about usinage for wood...
