French term

bassin de securite

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) wastewater treatment
I know, I need to start grading some of the questions I have asked - will do at the earliest opportunity but am working to a very tight deadline!

Context is below - taken from notes on a training course - and I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what a 'bassin de securite' is, exactly.

I found a website that mentions them, http://www.biotec.fr/ref5.htm
but was unable to figure out from there what they would be called in English. Safety tank/basin?

Discussion

BusterK Apr 18, 2007:

safety tank

From Degrémont water treatment glossary.
I think it might be quite a generic term

Depending on the context, it could be some sort of buffer tank, acting as a safety tank. Effluent or waste stream can be stored in this safety tank either before direct discharge (for the effluent) or before sending to a sensitive treatment (ASP for example).

Found a different possibility which could be a storm (water) tank collecting rainwater:

- le bassin de Provémont d’une capacité de 73 000 m³ ;

This would fit in with the fact it is in the tertiary treatment section.

Or again a tank for collecting surface water, all in all still a safety tank!
Ex:

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "What an excellent answer, thank you. Other answers very helpful too... and in the end it really was a toss-up between 'safety' and 'emergency' - but I felt that using one would not preclude the meaning of the other being inherent in the concept. In fact I have included all three terms in the glossary, although I was not so sure about 'retention reservoir' and wanted to avoid using the term 'reservoir' here - although I am sure the suggestion was made from a reliable source. Thanks to all."

emergency tank

The planning authority decided to grant permission for the revised design submitted on 9th September, 2005 subject to 8 no. conditions. These included a requirement to provide an emergency tank to contain 24 hours storage at Pump Station No. 01, with capacity at 6,000 gallons. The size of the sump at Pump Station 02 is also required to be agreed with the planning authority.

and the remaining two are used to blend the Thickened Sludge with the Primary Sludge. In addition there is one large tank, which is not typically used and serves as an emergency storage tank. The emergency storage tank is difficult to keep in normal operation because the pipes and pumps are not designed to accommodate the transfer of liquid sludge.

Quite possibly. Do you want to google it?

retention reservoir

A "bassin de securite" is an artificial reservoir built to retain liquids, such as rain water, that may have been polluted. It looks more like an industrial sized 'garden pond'. (My ex-husband is environmental manager in multinational chemical factory!)
