French term

réactif du fer

French to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Context is elimination of subcutaneous iron deposits forming part of dark circles under the eyes. Term occurs in the text: Le fer complexe très facilement avec un « réctif du fer » : le ferrospectral. Mélangés ensemble, fer et ferrospectral forment un complexe de couleur violette.

My suggested translation: Iron complexes very easily with an "iron grinder": ferrospectral. Mixed together, iron and ferrospectral form a purple-colored complex.

The word "réctif" seems to be a colloquial abbreviation appearing in a number of contexts. Here the term seems to imply that the "réctif du fer" induces (forces) the iron to complex. Any enlightenment as to an English equivalent would be much appreciated.

Discussion

Chris Lines (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
When combined.. I appreciate this suggestion and am using it. As for the mythical 'réctif', I did note the acute accent, but failed to see its significance!
Karen Tkaczyk Feb 3, 2010:
Agree with Helen on 'when combined'
Helen Chauveau Feb 3, 2010:
Slightly off topic but just a suggestion! Allow me to suggest 'When combined, iron and ferrospectral form ...' instead of 'Mixed together...'
Travelin Ann Feb 3, 2010:
maybe réactif?

reagent

This isn't "réctif" but "réactif" (if it was "rectif" there would be no accent) :
