Context:
MONTANTS en plats 50 x 10 mm effilés en about. Platine soudée en pied dimensions 100 x 100 x 10 mm. Espacement entre montants 1.25 m

I translated "effilé en about" with "tapered" (couldn't find anything else. But was is MONTANT? a support?

Indeed, the "montants" are the vertical whatsits embedded or otherwise fixed to the end of the stairs that support the rails that prevent you falling over the edge (or being pushed).
