CONTEXT: 44101. Boîte à miroir. - Bois et ivoire. - (pl. XXIII). [....] Boîte. - Par le peu qu'il en reste, on constate que le décor se composait d'un placage d'ivoire sur lequel étaient tracés et peints les ornements floraux, très simples dans la partie rectangulaire, plus riches dans l'autre. Le motif en est une frise, bordée, en bas, d'un étroit bandeau décoré en dents de scie, procédé géométrique employé ici pour schématiser une rangée de campanes renversées. Ces campanes sont peintes alternativement en vert et en rouge; dans les intervalles, un rond schématisant par le même procédé, une baie d'arbre fruitier. Toutes les baies sont rouges. La frise, nue dans la partie quadrangulaire, était remplie, dans l'autre, d'un motif lotiforme consistant dans ***l'alternance d'une ombelle épanouie et d'une ombelle entr'ouverte*** d'où l'on voit pendre la tête d'un bouton. Le motif est renversé: les bouquets ont la tête en bas. Picture of the object, although it doesn't show the sides of the box. The part where this is depicted is extremely damaged anyway.

ATTEMPT: The frieze, bare in the quadrangular portion, was filled in the other by a lotiform motif consisting of fully-opened umbel alternating with a slightly-opened one from which the head of a bud can be seen hanging down. The motif is inverted: the bouquets are upside down.
ISSUE: I'm not sure whether I've got the comparison right for épanoui vs entr'ouverte. Or is it blossomed vs. blossoming? opened vs. opening. Is it slightly-opened or partially-opened or half-opened?

"half open" might be construed too literally; while "partially open" covers all the bases, from barely open to nearly completely open.
Although "lotiform" is a valid term, I had to look it up to see that the "loti-" referred to lotus petals.
Following my usual prejudice against using a term --even one which is, technically, quite correct-- with which I myself am unfamiliar, I would suggest saying something like: "The quadrangular portion/element [baie] of the frieze is empty, while the other one contains a motif of repeated lotus petals, alternately fully open and partially open, from which the head of a button may be seen."
Although "lotiform" is a valid term, I had to look it up to see that the "loti-" referred to lotus petals.
