French term

la plaque de garniture de la garde

French to English Art/Literary Archaeology ancient art
Hi again!
DOC: 1907 Museum catalog of ancient Egyptian mirrors. Catalog entry.
CONTEXT: 44084.
This garde looks similar to the guard of a sword.
Plate XXI near the end of the book at https://books.google.com/books?id=qhs2AQAAMAAJ
https://books.google.com/books?id=qhs2AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA105&sour...
ATTEMPT: A appreciable layer of mastic in the hem of the outermost edge still adheres to the lining of the guard.
ISSUE: This cannot be seen on the plate at all and makes no sense. How can I handle this dilemma since the author died long ago and I can't ask? The author uses pièce de garde, la pièce de recouvrement de la garde, plaque de garde, and garde de miroir interchangeably, which I've translated throughout as "guard". I've found plaque de garde = guard plate; plaque de garniture = seal plate, trim plate, lining at Linguee and the like. Nothing seems to fit.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Sorry, I can't think of a synonym for face here.

Also, as a native US EN speaker, I've never seen "hem" except in reference to sewn cloth. "Seam" might be better.

It seems that a guard in a sword is a crossguard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword

Or just face, because it could as readily be the outer face from the user's perspective.
