In all, a greater familiarity with illness and with its creative uses has perhaps biased people in many parts of the world toward the uses of many forms of body tactics which can also be transferred to one’s intimate surrogates.

I am not very sure from your limited context. It is quite common for people who need more attention, to believe that they have an illness, the symptoms of which, they know of. This belief is so strong that they actually begin to exhibit the symptoms of the illness.
