Activity book for kids
This is a usual part of an activity book for kids, it is drawn like a little mosaic, with "fields" marked by dots, and a child has to colour only the marked fields in order to find the hidden character.
So the question is may I say:
Colour the fields (or is it sth else) marked by dots (or by sth else).
Thank you.

color the shapes marked with a dot
I've seen this type of activity. The shapes are singled out by a sole dot on the center of the shape. The child has then to color those shapes that contain the dot and leave the others blank. So it would be "color the shapes marked by dots". Is this it, Laura? I hope it helps.

: Doesn't sound like this is dot-to-dot Rita - that would be more like joining the numbers.... From the explanation, sounds like Laura's talking about 'colouring in'.

you may be right, but first you must connect the dots in order to define the shape

: that's a different activity altogether - in what's being described you don't join the dots, you colour in the shapes marked with a dot

that is a possibility

: I'm not sure that it's dot to dot, but who can tell from this description? Laura, we need more information: Is this colour-by-numbers (where there are numbers in each area that correspond to different colours), or just a colouring book?

Interesting point Lucas, in all of the colouring books I have seen, the shapes are defined by lines, not dots

: I think this is what Laura means, dot-to-dot

: If there are dots involved, then this fits. "Connect the dots" and then color it in.

Colour the space within the dotted lines.
Alternatively, colour the area within the dotted lines.

Colour in the dotted spaces
This is what I could understand from the above explanation.

colour only the dotted areas
if the areas to be coloured are dotted.

: Yes, that's it. I've seen this in my son's activity books. You could also say "colour the dotted areas" or "colour in the dotted areas"

English term (edited):
fields
shapes
I'd go with 'shapes' rather than fields....

You could probably go with something like:
\"Colour (in) the shapes where you see (pink dot, etc.)\"

: certainly not fields - that is way too technical for a children's book
