As the medieval Church was defining itself politically and geographically and consolidating its identity, groups such as the Waldesians, the Cathars and the Hussites were persecuted for their unorthodox beliefs. Significantly, the Church did not punish these groups itself but hunted them down and turned them over to secular governments for execution. In other words, like New Religious Movements today, medieval heresies were ***socially as well as religiously deviant***.
