New Religious Movements
As the theorist of religion J.Z. Smith states, "the most common form of classifying religions ... is dualistic and can be reduced ... to "theirs" and ours". One indication of the persistent power of the "theirs" category of religion is how often the most common names for religious adherents began as epithets created by outsiders. To call someone a Quaker, a Mormon, or even a Protestant was originally an insult, directed towards ***the religious "other"***.
