I would like to know what others are using for this phrase in U.S. Federal Courts. It's not a "fine," though it looks, walks, and quacks like a "fine..."

context Thanks, Mike. Yes, almost always, well over ninety percent of the time, the Defendant is unable to pay this assessment and the Judge waives it... I like this "contribución obligatoria"; it pretty well conveys the meaning...

context When a defendant in the US Court system is found gulity, or pleads guilty, to one count or different counts of an indictment, in addition to any potential fine, as defined in the Sentencing Guidelines, the defendant will also have to pay an assessment of $100 per charge. The way it is read, and thus translated, to the defendant, is it is due at the time of the sentencing. In reality, if the defendant is found indigent, and thus has the Federal Public Defender's Office, of a court-appointed private attorney through the CJA law appointed to him, this assessment will not be paid. This is the context.

This assessment is a type of fee, or evaluation if you will, that is simply $100 times each charge. It is obligatory according to the statute, and, as far as I recall, as been in use since 1992, when the original sentencing guidelines were passed.
