Para el caso de motores lo que se utiliza es el término "virar" para ese procedimiento de "hacer que gire" de forma manual, de forma de verificar funcionamiento, previo a darle arranque. Es un procedimiento normal también en los motores de barcos, etc. También puede usarse "girar".

"All manuals will tell the user to rotate or bar over the compressor prior to startup-especially prior to restarting a machine which has been running. Uneven cooling of the rotors and casing can cause a lockup or rub."

En todos los casos citados se trata de compresores industriales muy grandes, extremadamente costosos y frecuentemente sin spare (es decir, equipo único en la planta), por lo que toman muchísimas precauciones antes y durante su (re)arranque para evitar cualquier daño al equipo.
