I'm translating a birth certificate issued in Australia.
It has two columns; the column on the left reads: "Marriage of father and mother.

and the column in front of the first one says: Living males.........Living females 1
Deceased males.....Deceased females.
What does one thing have to do with the other?

: The second column indicates how many living or deceased sons or daughters from previous unions./I had the same idea as Ellen Kraus; now I see it probably means siblings to the baby (whose b.c. it is) by the same couple, since it doesn't specify mom/dad's.

Many thanks Molly, but I am not quite sure what makes you think they are from previous unions. The wording on b-certs from some parts of Australia reads perhaps more clearly "previous children of parents"
