Teresa, não sei se existe algum outro termo específico para buffer, só consigo pensar em barreira.

Na minha concepção um buffer é uma barreira, é muito comum ter uma área de arvores altas entre por exemplo, uma rodovia e as casas que ficam perto delas, essa barreira é chamada de buffer.
