Qui si parla degli antichissimi templi sumeri (per esempio a Ur, Babilonia, ecc.), dove le statue degli dèi venivano spostate e mosse da figure chiamate "handlers".
"For almost fifteen hundred years before Abraham, the world of myth had been appropriated as poetic text and used for temple dramas. There, as we now know, the statues of both gods and the human representatives who esteemed them were moved about by ***handlers***, enacting encounters between gods, as well as their everyday domestic activities. si potrebbe pensare a qualcosa come "servi di scena", secondo la proposta di davidebianco, ma secondo me è un'espressione troppo connotata verso la nostra moderna concezione del teatro come spettacolo (e artificio) - qui invece si tratta probabilmente d un rito che comprende anche degli aspetti di rappresentazione. Se dovessi decidere per una soluzione di questo tipo, consiglierei almeno di metterlo tra virgolette, per segnalare che si tratta di un uso alquanto improprio del termine.
Tuttavia, mi pare che "handlers" qui non abbia un senso particolarmente specifico, ma indichi solo, nel senso generico del verbo, "those who handle" - gli addetti alla manovra, per così dire. Quindi un termine più generico come "invervienti" mi pare del tutto adeguato - tanto più che nel testo viene chiaramente spiegato cosa fanno e che ruolo hanno.

the Handlers avrebbero un ruolo un po' come quelli che portano il drago tra le strade chinesi durante le feste. Non cerdo che qui possiamo considerarli attori, visto che nel testo dice che dovevano essere "invisibili al pubblico..."

ciao! sono anch'io più per l'idea di "inservienti" che "assistenti di scena", più che altro per la collocazione temporale dell'ultimo termine.
