Hi Luke, I believe it says he either failed the exam (è stato bocciato, non ha superato, è stato respinto) or did not complete the course (ha abbandonato/non ha completato/si è ritirato). In any case he doesn't get credit in this subject.
"Discontinued" might also refer to his/her quitting the exam session, although less probable in my opinion.
