Yesterday, Mr. Wagoner spent much of the day touting GM's development of high-tech, environmentally friendly vehicles, at one point taking Shanghai's mayor for a ride in a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell prototype. As car ownership booms in China and other Asian countries, Mr. Wagoner said, "sustainability is becoming an ever more important challenge for our industry." He said GM was looking for technologies that would help reduce the reliance on imported oil, a perennial concern in China.

On a major problem for GM in the U.S., Mr. Wagoner said he expects a deal "reasonably soon" on his company's contribution to labor costs at ailing auto-parts maker Delphi Corp. He estimated the deal will likely end up costing GM $6 billion to $7.5 billion -- though he said he expects the cost to be at the "lower end" of that range.
