About SAN and Its Functions

The Standard Address Number (SAN) is a unique seven-digit identifier used to signify a specific address of an organization in (or served by) the publishing industry. T It is an American National Standard, ANSI/NISO Z39.43-1993.

This system, initiated and maintained by R.R. Bowker, has become THE identification code for electronic communication within the industry.

It is the method used by PUBNET, X*NET and PubEasy.com systems and is required in all electronic data interchange communications using the Book Industry Systems Advisory Committee (BISAC) EDI formats.

The SAN itself has no functional meaning -- it merely defines an address. The SAN becomes meaningful only when used for identification of customers for electronic ordering transmission, voice recognition ordering systems, teleordering, for billing or shipping account numbers, etc.

The example invoice number INV123456 dated February 26, 1998 was shipped to a customer location with the Standard Address Number(SAN) of 6678157. The bill-to location is SAN 1135309. Notice that the full address is not sent if a SAN is available. The customers Purchase Order number is PONUM-1234567 dated January 31,1998.

Standard Address Numbers (SANs)

Each invoice included in an EDI batch requires a corresponding Standard Address Number, or SAN, to identify the store to which the delivery belongs.

The SAN is unique to each store, and both Waterstone's Finance Operations Department and The SAN Agency keep up to date records of all standard address numbers. The SAN should be placed in the CLOC (Customer's Location) element of the CLO (Customer Location) segment of each invoice message.

A valid SAN must always be quoted for each invoice included in an EDI transmission. It should be noted that 50% of all invoice queries arising from EDI transmissions relate to missing or incorrect SANs.

EDI batches received with invalid SANs, no SAN information or suppliers' proprietary store codes will not be processed and will result in non-payment of invoices.
