This is the term used to describe the very such thing in the French help section of our own messaging system which I cannot name but is actually Lotus Notes.
What we are talking about is a scaled down version of the full application (be it Word, Excel whatever) which lets you view the document attached to the message but not alter it.

: Well found --- I couldn't see it in my own s/w! // Exactly! My only quibble would be that it is arguably a special 'browser version' of Excel, rather than simply Excel 'operating in browser mode' -- mere semantics!
