But part of my problem with the phrase in the OP is that it seems to focus upon the duration of Heidegger's day, not the quality of his work.

I think "Even on his best day, Heidegger could never be called a philosopher of science." is quite idiomatic. (This says that even his best work wasn't good enough.)

Sein und Zeit (Being and Time) There is a possibility that this sentence should not be interpreted from the perspective of linguistics but from the perspective of philosophy (phenomenology). Philosophers like Heidegger and William Richardson are influenced by the notion of time, being and existence. Heidegger did write the book "Sein und Zeit (Being and Time)". And, Heidegger placed an emphasis on the notion of Dasein (Being there).

Moreover, in one book "in the longest day he ever lived..." was used instead of "on the longest day he ever lived..." Thus, your sentence may be a translation.

为了强调 @J.H.Wang 我看下文(你给的第一个链接)，感到前半句'on the longest day he ever lived 是强调此人绝不能称作科学哲学家。字面的意思说他(哪怕)在自己一生中最长的一天(也)从未能称作科学哲学家，中文里没有这样的表达法。所以我凭直觉就想处理为“终其一生”，来表达此强调的意思。仅供参考哦。也可以再斟酌
