Door (alleen) ter plaatse van de sloten voor te boren, ondervinden de planken minder weerstand bij het inbrengen.
They are contrasting damwandsloten and damwandplanken - not too sure how you distinguish these.
evidently the damwandsloten are U-shaped and the planken fit between them.

bij gebruik van nieuwe onbeschadigde rechte planken is de slotweerstand in het algemeen lager. Bij sluitplanken treedt dubbele slotweerstand op die door wringing nog aanzienlijk kan worden vergroot;

Steel sheet piling consists of a series of sections with interlocking grooves or guides, known as clutches, along each edge of the section. Each pile is engaged, clutch to clutch, with a pile previously driven and then driven itself as nearly as possible to the same depth.
In this way a continuous, impervious membrane is inserted into the ground. In most designs the convexity of the sections is arranged to face alternately to one side and the other of the line along which the membrane is driven, so that the lateral stiffness is increased.
Sheet piles can be either temporary or permanent.
Temporary sheet piling is usually in the form of retaining structures to control or exclude earth and/or water and allow permanent works to proceed. Steel sheet piles in permanent works function in similar ways to temporary piles. Examples of usage include river training and flood protection, retaining walls, coastal protection, harbor walls, cut and cover tunnels and underpasses.'
