Czech term

fázař

Czech to English Tech/Engineering Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
From sentence: Hermína Týrlová se poprvé se zlínským filmem setkala jako fázařka, animátorka i kreslířka společnosti Ire-film při natáčení baťovské reklamy o gumových hračkách Slon zachráncem (1934).

this "phase person" does the ground work, the moving of the figures ever so slightly in what Czechs call fáze...but I can't find anything to back me up in English, this animator's closest friend...
this much from Kudlov (Zlin studio):
fázař je : grafik, mistr, vymýšlí polohy pohybu, rozkreslí jednotlivé fáze - důležité polohy budoucí animace, animátor pak animuje celý pohyb

thanks!

Hi Hannah from what I can find:
"inbetween (-er) - inbetweens are the drawings that fill-in between the keyframes. The inbetweener is the person who draws them". http://www.animationpost.co.uk/doping/glossary.htm
In-between. The drawings that are between the key poses. These are drawn to create fluid transitions between poses.
Now I'm going to sit back and wonder at the fact that the UK and US English appear to be identical. Wow.
Hannah Geiger (X) Jul 14, 2012:
Liz I think the tweeners come later, they are the contourists and colourists, I think
Once the key animation is approved, the lead animator forwards the scene on to the clean-up department, made up of the clean-up animators and the inbetweeners. The clean-up animators take the lead and assistant animators' drawings and trace them onto a new sheet of paper, taking care in including all of the details present on the original model sheets, so that it appears that one person animated the entire film. The inbetweeners will draw in whatever frames are still missing in between the other animators' drawings. This procedure is called tweening. The resulting drawings are again pencil-tested and sweatboxed until they meet approval.

Hannah Geiger (X) Jul 14, 2012:
As to the tweening, would you say it refers to "in-between-ing?"
Hannah Geiger (X) Jul 14, 2012:
Funny that you mention it. I have one Bratří v Triku text which mentions 'phase maker', I could have used it but I did not. First of all, it is the only one out there, and I don t find it very good. Secondly, if it is ever used, I think it would be for animated puppets or other types of three-dimensional figurines, which this is not. Not quite a stop motion, but could be. And lastly, these people are, I think, still assistants in that they are trained in animation, which this is a part of.
Elizabeth Spacilova Jul 14, 2012:
another resource "fázování - kreslení mezifází pohybu mezi klíčovými kresbami animátora" at http://www.czechanimation.cz/texts/bratri-triku/ - which it seems would be called "tweening"
Hannah Geiger (X) Jul 10, 2012:
Scott, I think that the Director has a small group of animators (or a larger one, depending on the project), so "assistant animator" might perhaps be a bit vague, the best IMO might be "assistant to the Lead Animator" since there are also "clean-up" animators,

The resulting drawings are again pencil-tested and sweatboxed until they meet approval.

i.e. "Koloristé a konturisté" would probably be the "clean-up" animators
Hannah Geiger (X) Jul 10, 2012:
I gather that it is a "secondary" animator, i.e. something similar to "assistant animator" or "team animator" -

assistant animator

Explanation:
Animation starts when there are approved layouts (if applicable), designs or models, voice track and timings for the Animator to work with. The Director or Animation Director will assign scenes to Animators who produce the images which, when recorded in sequence, create the illusion of movement. Depending on the project and technique, there can be a single Animator working alone or a large team in which there may be a range of talents and skills from lead animator down to junior assistant. The Director approves the animation or, on a larger project, this may be done by the Animation Director or Supervisor. As scenes are approved, they are cut into the working reel/layout reel so they can be viewed in context before moving on to the next stage. In most cases, Effects Animation will be done after the main animation is complete.

I believe that "key animator" is also used for the assistants directly under the lead animator

as to your text, she probably started as a junior assistant and progressed to a more senior position

graphic artist

A suggestion. From your description and list of her separate roles, there is the animator, so the "rozkreslení fází" is essentially graphic artist's task.

in-between animator

After consulting with an artist friend.
Example sentence:

She began her art career at the age of sixteen, working part-time as an in-between animator at Studio Musashi (an in-betweener is an animator who fills in the poses between the key poses done by more senior animators).
