Credit migration is a term that is used to describe one of the first stages of financial distress for bond issuers. It is used to describe the stage when the credit rating of a bond issuer is downgraded. When a credit rating is downgraded the bond issuer is not actually defaulting on its debt obligations, but the price of the bonds will still be affected.
