Translation - English Agatha Christie is very humorous. In the work of this best-selling author, hints of humor are evident in the characterization of Hercule Poirot, one of Agatha’s world-renowned characters, and in the social satire that portrays the wealthy society in Britain. However, it is in the characterization of Miss Marple that the author seems to further the use of dramatic irony and sarcasm.
“The Body in the Library,” one the most crowd-pleasing books released in 1942, is now the sixth book of a collection - The Best of Agatha Christie Books - released by Grupo Folha, a Brazilian media conglomerate. This lovely publication will be available to aficionados next Sunday, June 30. In this fiction, Miss Marple inherits from the author, a leading female figure in the 20s, the same adversities that any female figure acting as a detective in a male-predominant field would encounter.
In the plot, a young 18-year-old teenage girl is found dead at 7:00 am in in the library of Gossington Hall, home to a retired couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bantry, who shows no apparent relationship with the victim. As the police start the investigation, Mrs. Bantry makes a clear request that Miss Marple, an old trusted friend, takes over the case.
As the investigation seems to come closer to a resolution, the refined humor of the author focuses on the male figures in the plot, Colonel Melchett and Inspector Slack, whose skepticism about Miss Marple’s abilities to solve the case grows overtime. Both ill-mannered male figures are constantly disregarding any contribution provided by Miss Marple in relation to the case.
As the plot unfolds, it is satisfying seeing how the elderly amateur sleuth outsmarts the ill-mannered men. Once again Agatha Christie shows her love for Miss Marple, her favorite character, even when the public claims that Miss Marple is overshadowed by Poirot’s success.
