Report from  MrsHoward
At our Powwow in Las Vegas, Nevada among the four participants we had Italian, Spanish, French, German and English languages represented.

We feel the biggest issue among translators is competition from inexperienced providers, who drive down translator's average rates. In general, a constant pressure for low rates. Also, we are concerned that companies often use in-house employees (not employed as translators) for "on the fly" translations if they are bilingual, though they aren't necessarily qualified as a translator. They just slip it in with their regular business tasks, with no quality assurance processes in place.

For next year's theme to be selected by the International Federation of Translators, we suggest: "Who is the translator?" or something to the effect that the visibility of translators should be emphasized to the public. Many people don't even know the meaning of a "translator," thinking instead of machine translation or other t9n technologies.

What message we'd like to send from our powwow to other translators? "We are four cats, but still alive!"
