Do you guys think that working with both a small laptop screen and another bigger external monitor set up as extended one would be a good idea? Has anyone ever tried this?

Yup, that's how I work right now. I don't know how small your laptop screen is but mine is 15.6 inches and my monitor is 19in.

PC Nov 27, 2016

As I mentioned here before, if you connect your laptop to a screen, a keyboard and a mouse, you are working with a PC, not a laptop. So I think it's pretty obvious that the majority works with PC's, as a laptop is not adequate for a lot of typing, in addition to a likely undue position, ergonomically speaking.

It is also very common for translators to prefer a laptop, so they can take it with them when they travel, etc. But then, at home, when you're actually going to work hard, you

It is also very common for translators to prefer a laptop, so they can take it with them when they travel, etc. But then, at home, when you're actually going to work hard, you connect it to the external screen/keyboard/mouse, and you are no longer working "with a laptop" per se.

Answers are therefore pretty ambiguous for this poll.

I have 2 laptops ready for work. One is permanently connected to a big screen, mouse and keyboard, so it's actually a PC.

I use my second laptop to work in a cafe or other places outside my home office. But always connected to a mouse and an external keyboard.

I personally don't like to work with 2 screens at the same time.

A hybrid system Nov 28, 2016

I use an 11.6 inch laptop which helps with portability.

Upon reaching office, I connect it to a 24inch monitor and my beautiful mechanical keyboard (yes, everyone should use mechanical keyboards if you wish to make typing an enjoyable activity) of cherry blue switches.

Upon reaching home, I connect it to a more modest 18 inch monitor and my other twin mechanical keyboard with same cherry blue switches.

Life is good so far.

My answer was laptop, Nov 28, 2016

but I agree with Mario. My laptop is closed and I am working with an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, so maybe PC would be a more accurate description.

On the other hand, I take my laptop with me on vacation and it is nice to have everything that is saved on my computer with me. However, it would be a pain to do much translation work without my regular keyboard and without a few important paper reference works, which all get left at home.

I also spent years and years genuinely working on a laptop at home and I would certainly not recommend it.

Hi Taha,

Could you please recommend a mechanical keyboard brand? What is the exact keyboard you're using now? I don't want to make to much noise while typing, so blue switch seems not suitable, right? How do you think about brown switch?

MX Brown - Yeah! Nov 29, 2016

Dear Anh,

You are absolutely correct. Blue switches are noisy. I love that noise though, helps me focus and get immersed in what I'm doing. But that's because I am working in the privacy of my cabin/bedroom. Blue switch mayhem cannot be tolerated everywhere, and I understand that.

In that context, yes, as you correctly point out, mx brown are the best. However, there will still be a dampened click sound, a bit flatter compared to the quirky mx blues but that can be easily dealt with through an o-ring modification. If you are willing to go that far (which you should for the sake of mech keyboards, coz after God, its the mechs who rule this world) then I would recommend mx browns with o-rings - best typing experience ever.

Coming to the brand - well, since I am located in India, we have our tried, tested and reliable TVS Bharat Gold Mechanical Keyboard which costs somewhere around $30-35. It is on the cheaper side. It comes sans background lighting and other such luxuries.

Anyways, if you have made up your mind to buy a mech keyboard, then the best brand out there is das followed by corsair and the like. These badasses are >$100 so you gotta mind your pocket while buying these.

Good luck,
Taha
