Dear colleagues,
I am a very new Trados user (Studio 2014 on Windows 7) and although I have managed to navigate my way around the basic translation process, I am still very puzzled by the way TMs work (I have only used Wordfast Classic up to now, which is very different). I have just finished a project and want to make sure I've got everything right before I finalize it, as the other day, I finalized a project but was never able to export the TM as a tmx file.
So what I've done/got up to now:
1) When I created my project, I created an empty TM as I had nothing to put in it.
2) The TM has been working fine as matches were found and inserted automatically during the translation process.
3) In the Project Settings, the "enabled", "look up", "concordance" and "update" boxes are ticked.
4) In the Project Settings > Language Pairs > Batch Processing > Translation Memory Updates I have "Always add new translation to the translation memory", Segment status "Translated", "Translation Approved" and "Signed Off" ticked.
5) However, when I open my TM in the TM view by clicking on Translation Memories and opening it (I have now understood that the TM doesn't open automatically, hurrah!) there are absolutely no segments! Somehow I also managed to export the TM (I can't remember how) and it was also empty.
6) All I could send my customer is my translation. I didn't use the "finalize" option or anything to make sure I can go back and produce the famous tmx TM I need and would like to export.
Where am I going wrong? I have obviously misunderstood the genius of not having TMs updated automatically (perhaps to make sure only final segments are placed in the final TM?). And perhaps while we're at it: let's imagine I imported a tmx TM into the TM I created at the beginning (as this is normally what I get from my curstomers). How can I export a tmx TM which includes the segments which were provided by my customer PLUS the new segments?
I would be very grateful for any pointers you may have!

If your TM was empty...

... and yet you were getting matches, then my guess is you either selected a different TM to the one you think you were working with (apologies, but I have seen this happen) or you created a Project TM when you created your Project. If you did the latter then you will find there is also a TM within the Project files folder and this will contain only the segments for your Project, plus any that would have been relevant from your Main TM if you had one.

So you would locate that TM and then open it in the Translation Memories View. Once open you right-click and select export (or use the export icon on the ribbon).
Another way to do this is to convert your sdlxliff (Studio bilingual file) directly to TMX using an openexchange application. This one would do the job nicely:
