Two women (friends) are speaking on the phone, one in Egypt, one in America. The woman in America says she wishes she could visit the other lady and wants to send some things for her kids. قطع العوايد السلام عليكم
أتفق تماما مع رندة بخصوص شرخها للعبارة. فالسيدة تدعو على هذه العادات، مثل قطع العوايد وسنينها... لدى فالترجمة قد تكون أيضا بمثابة دعاء على هذه العادات
Arabic & More (asker) Aug 24, 2013:
Thank you both for your input. Randa, your explanation makes sense. Unfortunately, I do not have more context than this. I only have a transcript of the phone conversation and not the audio. When people are speaking on the phone, they often speak in broken sentences and shift from topic to topic. Sometimes they even speak to someone sitting in the same room with them and you don't realize it because you are only reading the words on paper. Sometimes they share jokes with each other that only they understand. So things are not always as straightforward as one would like.
Awad Balaish Aug 24, 2013:
شكرا لك رندا على التوضيح كنت استفسر من اامل منك نستفيد دائما يا رندا
Randa Farhat Aug 24, 2013:
أمل، لأن هذه عادة عند الناس كلما رأوا شيئاً في الأسواق أحبوا أن يشتروه لفلان وعلاّن، فالمرأة المصرية تقول للأخرى، "ما تقلقيش، يقطع العوايد وسنينها"، أو "الواحد مش عارف يبطّل عوايده"، أو "أيوه فاهماكِ قطع العوايد صعب"، إلخ
Awad Balaish Aug 24, 2013:
.........speaking on the phone in Arabic or English, if the telephone call was in English were there other Arabic words uttered by any of them at the end of the call.
من المؤكد أن العوايد عامية وهي بالعربية المكتوبة (لا أحب تسميتها الفصحى) عادات جمع عادة أما العوائد بالهمزة جع عائد وانت تعرفها
هل يعني أنك قمت بترجمة الحوار بستثناء هذه يجب التوضيح؟
